As Facebook grows, millions say, 'no, thanks'

(AP) ? Don't try to friend MaLi Arwood on Facebook. You won't find her there.

You won't find Thomas Chin, either. Or Kariann Goldschmitt. Or Jake Edelstein.

More than 900 million people worldwide check their Facebook accounts at least once a month, but millions more are Facebook holdouts.

They say they don't want Facebook. They insist they don't need Facebook. They say they're living life just fine without the long-forgotten acquaintances that the world's largest social network sometimes resurrects.

They are the resisters.

"I'm absolutely in touch with everyone in my life that I want to be in touch with," Arwood says. "I don't need to share triviality with someone that I might have known for six months 12 years ago."

Even without people like Arwood, Facebook is one of the biggest business success stories in history. The site had 1 million users by the end of 2004, the year Mark Zuckerberg started it in his Harvard dorm room. Two years later, it had 12 million. Facebook had 500 million by summer 2010 and 901 million as of March 31, according to the company.

That staggering rise in popularity is one reason why Facebook Inc.'s initial public offering is one of the most hotly anticipated in years. The company's shares are expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Friday under the ticker symbol "FB". Facebook is likely to have an estimated market valuation of some $100 billion, making it worth more than Kraft Foods, Ford or Disney.

Facebook still has plenty of room to grow, particularly in developing countries where people are only starting to get Internet access. As it is, about 80 percent of its users are outside U.S. and Canada.

But if Facebook is to live up to its pre-IPO hype and reward the investors who are clamoring for its stock this week, it needs to convince some of the resisters to join. Two out of every five American adults have not joined Facebook, according to a recent Associated Press-CNBC poll. Among those who are not on Facebook, a third cited a lack of interest or need.

If all those people continue to shun Facebook, the social network could become akin to a postal system that only delivers mail to houses on one side of the street. The system isn't as useful, and people aren't apt to spend as much time with it. That means fewer opportunities for Facebook to sell ads.

Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, says that new communications channels ? from the telephone to radio, TV and personal computers ? often breed a cadre of holdouts in their early days.

"It's disorienting because people have different relationships with others depending on the media they use," Rainie says. "But we've been through this before. As each new communications media comes to prominence, there is a period of adoption."

Len Kleinrock, 77, says Facebook is fine for his grandchildren, but it's not for him.

"I do not want more distractions," he says. "As it is, I am deluged with email. My friends and colleagues have ready access to me and I don't really want another service that I would feel obliged to check into on a frequent basis."

Kleinrock says his resistance is generational, but discomfort with technology isn't a factor.

After all, Kleinrock is arguably the world's first Internet user. The University of California, Los Angeles professor was part of the team that invented the Internet. His lab was where researchers gathered in 1969 to send test data between two bulky computers ?the beginnings of the Arpanet network, which morphed into the Internet we know today.

"I'm having a 'been-there, done-that' feeling," Kleinrock says. "There's not a need on my part for reaching out and finding new social groups to interact with. I have trouble keeping up with those I'm involved with now."

Thomas Chin, 35, who works at an advertising and media planning company in New York, says he may be missing out on what friends-of-friends-of-friends are doing, but he doesn't need Facebook to connect with family and closer acquaintances.

"If we're going to go out to do stuff, we organize it (outside) of Facebook," he says.

Some people don't join the social network because they don't have a computer or Internet access, are concerned about privacy, or generally dislike Facebook. Those without a college education are less likely to be on Facebook, as are those with lower incomes. Women who choose to skip Facebook are more likely than men to cite privacy issues, while seniors are more likely than those 50-64 years old to cite computer issues, according the AP-CNBC poll.

About three-quarters of seniors are not on Facebook. By contrast, more than half of those under 35 use it every day.

The poll of 1,004 adults nationwide was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications May 3-7 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Steve Jones, a professor who studies online culture and communications at the University of Illinois at Chicago, says many resisters consider Facebook to be too much of a chore.

"We've added social networking to our lives. We haven't added any hours to our days," Jones says. "The decision to be online on Facebook is simultaneously a decision not to be doing something else."

Jones says many people on Facebook try to overcome that by multitasking, but they end up splitting their attention and engaging with others online only superficially.

Arwood, 47, a restaurant manager in Chicago, says she was surprised when colleagues on an English-teaching program in rural Spain in 2010 opted to spend their breaks checking Facebook.

"I spent my time on break trying to learn more about the Spanish culture, really taking advantage of it," she says. "I went on walks with some of the students and asked them questions."

Kariann Goldschmitt, 32, a music professor at New College of Florida in Sarasota, Fla., was on Facebook not long after its founding in 2004, but she quit in 2010. In part, it was because of growing concerns about her privacy and Facebook's ongoing encouragement of people to share more about themselves with the company, with marketers and with the world.

She says she's been much more productive since leaving.

"I was a typical user, on it once or twice a day," she says. "After a certain point, I sort of resented how it felt like an obligation rather than fun."

Besides Facebook resisters and quitters, there are those who take a break. In some cases, people quit temporarily as they apply for new jobs, so that potential employers won't stumble on photos of their wild nights out drinking. Although Facebook doesn't make it easy to find, it offers options for both deleting and suspending accounts.

Goldschmitt says it takes effort to stay in touch with friends and relatives without Facebook. For instance, she has to make mental notes of when her friends are expecting babies, knowing that they have become so used to Facebook "that they don't engage with us anymore."

"I'm like, 'Hmmm, when is nine months?' I have to remember to contact them since they won't remember to tell me when the baby's born."

Neil Robinson, 54, a government lawyer in Washington, says that when his nephew's son was born, pictures went up on Facebook almost immediately. As a Facebook holdout, he had to wait for someone to email photos.

After years of resisting, Robinson plans to join next month, mostly because he doesn't want to lose touch with younger relatives who choose Facebook as their primary means of communication.

But for every Robinson, there is an Edelstein, who has no desire for Facebook and prefers email and postcards.

"I prefer to keep my communications personal and targeted," says Jake Edelstein, 41, a pharmaceutical consultant in New York. "You're getting a message that's written for you. Clearly someone took the time to sit down to do it."

Glide Into Your Project With These Home Improvement Tips | Coin ...

Build your own utility shelves with furring strips, plywood, and screws. Build two identical ladder-like sides using the furring strips and screws. Connect them perpendicularly by screwing on additional furring cut to the width of the shelves. Finally, screw plywood panels in place to make the shelf surfaces.

If the stain on your deck has been damaged through years of wear and tear and is beginning to fade it can turn into an ugly gray color. It is within your reach to re-stain your deck and give it a make over. You will first need to strip the old stain off! Remember this when you have made your final decision.

An easy, quick way to update your house with some home improvements is to start with your cabinet hardware. Whether you choose to update your bathroom or kitchen, changing the cupboard knobs, drawer pulls, and hinges can instantly change the look of the whole room.

Do not overlook common household objects for solving organizational or storage problems in your home. You can make a coat rack from a board and some old cupboard knobs, for instance, and you can use baby food jars for storing small fasteners and pieces of hardware. Not only does this help you to get organized, but you are saving money and recycling, too.

Paint your floor in sections corresponding with the direction of the planking. When you paint the floor of a large room it is easy to paint yourself into a corner or to unintentionally block access to the rest of the house until the paint dries. If you paint in sections you can leave paths that run along specific boards. When you paint the adjoining section everything will match perfectly.

When improving your home, take the character of the neighborhood into consideration. A Victorian home on a block of saltbox cottages is going to stand out like a sore thumb. A remodel that blends seamlessly into the existing neighborhood has a greater chance of selling when it?s time to move.

Maintain your septic tank regularly. You can easily buy certain chemicals that accelerate decomposition and avoid overflowing. When you plan home improvement make sure you do not tamper accidentally with your septic tank. If you need to get a detailed plan of your house and be extremely carefully to avoid costly damages.

A simple way to improve your bathroom is by repainting it. Always use a satin/eggshell or semi-gloss paint, as this is more mold resistant than a flat paint, and can also be wiped down more easily. When choosing a color, take into account the size of the bathroom. If it is very small, then opt for a light color. If the ceiling is of low or average height, then consider painting it a shade lighter than the walls. This will create the illusion that the ceiling is higher.

Hang your brooms up and off the floor. Over time, the bristles on the brush will become deformed and no longer clean well if the are on the floor. Hanging the brooms will extend their lifetime. You will end up replacing brooms less and you will save money by buying less frequently.

You should never allow a contractor to begin work on your project without a signed contract. If at all possible have the contract reviewed by a lawyer before proceeding. Start and finish dates, warranty information, the work to be performed and the total cost should all be clearly spelled out in the contract.

If you have limited floor space in a bedroom, consider lofting your bed. As long as your ceilings are high enough, lofting your bed can dramatically increase the amount of floor space in your room. Many furniture companies now stock double and even king and queen sized loft bed frames. So even if you share a bed with a partner, you can still loft it.

In summary, home improvement is easier now than ever before. By using the tips provided, you can be on your way to having the home you have always dreamed of. With a little time, energy and creativity, you are sure to create the perfect look for your home. The best part is that you can achieve it all for fractions of what you would pay a professional.

Abortion vs. Adoption: Why So Many Choose the First and What We ...

Culture

Remember the ?Choose Your Own Adventure? books? My brothers and I pored over those as kids. On each step of your journey, you were given choices. You were in the Amazon. Did you want to ride a riverboat or travel to the ancient ruins by foot? Did you want to hire a tour guide or follow a local Indian? Your entire journey ? and sometimes your life ? would hinge on the choices you made.

While ?choosing your own adventure? can give kids a heightened sense of appreciation for thinking through their decisions, the decision I?m going to talk about today is far more important than anything these books covered. And it requires thought, research, and a life-or-death choice.

Adoption is the kind, loving choice for everyone involved.

Countless women in the U.S. choose abortion over adoption for their unborn babies every year. When I sat in on counseling sessions at a pregnancy center, I learned that women are often very closed to the idea of adoption. They either want to keep their baby themselves or get rid of the baby now. Adoption statistics are hard to track, since states are not necessarily required to report domestic adoptions. However, the numbers are grim, and much of it is owing to abortion:

Between 1989 and 1995, 1.7 percent of children born to never-married white women were placed for adoption, compared to 19.3 percent before 1973. Among never-married black women, relinquishment rates have ranged from .2 percent to 1.5 percent.

Business Library reports that ?there are up to 36 couples waiting for every one baby placed for adoption.?

In the USA, there are approximately two million infertile?couples?waiting to adopt, many times regardless of the child?s medical problems such as Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, HIV infection or terminally ill. Dr. Brad Imler, President of America?s Pregnancy Helpline, confirms the challenge of waiting couples by stating: ?Only 1% of the Helpline?s annual 40,000 clients inquires about adoption.?

Clearly, this is a very sad ? and I would say epidemic ? situation. Many good, loving families are waiting throughout our nation for a baby whom they want to cherish, value, and raise for the rest of that baby?s life. Instead of babies going to these families, they go into a trash heap or down a garbage disposal. Why do mothers feel that killing their children is a better option that choosing families for their children?

Over the years, adoption has gotten a bad rap. Too many people confuse adoption with the foster care system. I personally know incredible people in the foster care system, but it?s clear that the system could use some reforming. Yes, some adults do enter the foster care system for the money it provides or other wrong reasons. However, adoption ? especially the adoption of a newborn baby ? almost always involves a loving, excited couple who have dreamed for years of holding and caring for their own special treasure. Adoption can cost an arm and a leg for the adoptive parents (it?s free for the birth parents), so they are most certainly not in it for the money.

Do mothers considering abortion realize that families actually go on waiting lists to adopt newborn babies? Do they realize that some couples wait years to adopt the baby they?ve desperately waited to hold in their arms? Do mothers realize how many experienced parents with wisdom, resources, and plenty of love are reaching out to adopt another child ? no matter his or her race, gender, or disability?

I firmly believe that one of the best things the pro-life movement can do is promote adoption. We cannot claim that every mother out there can adequately care for her baby alone. That?s simply not true. We should stand behind any mother who desires to keep her child, but we should not demand this of all mothers. While the inability to care for a baby is no excuse to kill her ? just as the inability to care for a five-year-old is no excuse to kill him ? we should work harder to paint an accurate picture of adoption for pregnant mothers.

We need to let mothers know that they can handpick their babies? adoptive families. They can choose an open adoption, where they see their babies at certain times throughout the year. They can choose a partially open adoption, where they receive photos and updates about their children?s lives. Or they can choose a closed adoption and give their babies completely over to their adoptive families. Adoption is full of choices for the mother and the father, too, if he is involved.

Nightlight Christian Adoptions (who works with people of all religious backgrounds) provides great information to mothers and fathers who would consider adoption. They connect birth mothers with other women who can talk to them about their questions and concerns. They even have parent profiles of parents who are already approved for adoption and able to take a baby very quickly.

You will decide the type of ongoing contact you want to have with the adopting family, whether it is through pictures, letters, emails, or visitations. You are able to get to know your child and over time your child will know about you and will always know how much you cared ? because you chose a loving family for them. Adoption doesn?t cost you a thing, and our time, even if you choose to parent, is free. If you need help, adopting families can legally help with pregnancy-related costs such as medical bills, counseling for both birthparents, maternity clothes, and living expenses. Adoption is about loving your baby so much that you give them the world, being mature enough to admit you are not ready to parent, and responsible enough to choose the right family to care for your child. It gives you the opportunity to create a life for you and your child that you both can live with. If you?d like to learn more about the loving option of adoption, with no obligations, call us. The call is free: (888) 933-2237

Another thing?we need to stop referring to adoption as ?giving up? a mother?s baby. She is not giving up her baby. Giving up is equated with failure and bad decisions. In reality, adoption has nothing to do with giving up and everything to do with giving life ? life instead of death.

Adoption gives life and a family to your child.

Some mothers choose abortion instead of adoption because they believe they can?t deal with wondering about where their babies are for the rest of their lives. Or, if they are pregnant for nine months, they want to enjoy the results of their hard work; they want to keep their babies. We need to encourage mothers who want to know about their babies to choose open adoptions. We need to make sure they are informed and know they can receive photos and regular updates so they don?t have to worry about their babies so much. They can handpick the parents. And there is always a waiting period in adoptions where the birth mother can change her mind and take her baby back. We need to encourage mothers who would want to keep their babies if they stayed pregnant to keep their babies. They do have mothers? hearts, and we need to encourage them to keep them!

As pro-lifers, let?s learn more about adoption. Let?s become familiar with the stories of adopted children. All the ones I know are incredibly grateful that their mothers gave them a chance, a life, and a family instead of the finality and cruelty of death.

East Cooper Aamco With Tips On Getting a Car Ready For Summer ...

VN:F [1.9.17_1161]

Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina : Many families travel over the summer months to destinations around the country in their automobiles. It is important to family safety and comfort that their cars are in good working condition before leaving.

Get a vehicle inspection. To avoid auto repairs along the route travelers will want to have a complete inspection of their vehicle including the air-conditioning system. It is important to have a trained auto repair technician go over the vehicle and check the engine, exhaust system, battery and the cooling system. To avoid auto repairs all of these systems need to be in peak working order.

Tire Pressure. This is an area that if often overlooked until there is a problem. Under normal conditions, tires will lose up to one pound of pressure per square inch each month. When drivers are putting on a lot of miles in a day on a road trip, this loss will increase. Make sure the car is cool and then use a tire gauge to check the air pressure. It is a good idea to do this once a month. To avoid auto repairs while on vacation, make sure this is part of the inspection that is completed before leaving on a trip.

Tire Tread. While checking the pressure in the tires, check the tread which should be at least 1/16 of an inch in depth. There is great test that can be done with a penny. Insert the penny at several different points in the tire. Make sue that President Lincoln?s head is pointing downward. If the top of the president?s head can be seen, this is a good indication that the tire is word and may require replacement. Don?t stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire and a car full of family, so check the tires to avoid these auto repairs.

Check fluid levels. Have an auto repair technician check the fluid levels in the vehicle. This should include the transmission, engine oil, brake fluid, windshield washer, power steering fluids and coolant. Also make sure the vehicle has a full tank of gas before starting a trip.

Use caution when loading the vehicle. With rising gas prices a traveler does not want to overload their vehicle. This will not only increase gas consumption, but also over heat tires and cause excessive wear on tires. In the event there is a need for auto repairs, this will eliminate the need to have a lot of stuff to unpack from the car. This can hard to do with everyone wanting to take their things with them on vacation, but try and cut down as much as possible.

Take an emergency kit. Emergencies will happen no matter how prepared a family is for the trip. Some of the items needed to handle minor car repairs are:

  • Flashlight and batteries
  • A reflector
  • Protective gloves
  • Jumper cables
  • Basic toolkit
  • Flares and matches
  • A blanket
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Gallon of distilled water
  • Non-perishable food itemsIt is also a good idea to have an auto club membership for those unexpected auto repairs. Make sure there is a fully charged cell phone available. A car charger for a cell phone is a great asset for a long summer trip.

One Year On Passion Capital Proves Its Mettle As A Go-To Seed VC In Europe

128158v2-max-250x250Although it's a year this week since Passion Capital appeared on the tech scene in London, it feels like they have been around a lot longer. It was in July 2009 I sat on the sun-kissed roof of what became known as their White Bear Yard base in London's Clerkenwell, having had a tour of a vast empty warehouse space which three noted tech angels planned to fill with their invested startups. Unlike on or two other tech angels I knew, these guys were something of a breed apart. A laid-back German ex-DJ who had killed it in ecommerce, a cool-calm-collected Brit veteran of the Internet and a former Valley maven who had seen the early days of Skype. We expected interesting things form these three musketeers and we got it. Many of their early investments are now seen as Passion Capital portfolio companies, but in truth, whatever the brand they work under, the special sauce that Eileen, Robert and Stefan brings to the party is the essential ingredient.
