Cloud and Outsourcing, an Alliance for a Newer Evolution | Gaining ...

Originally published on Global Services

In most cases, leveraging cloud delivery models, be it in application, infrastructure, or platforms, implies being served end-to-end by an external vendor unlike the typical ?do-it-yourself? products. Therefore, in a way, the cloud is driving the IT consumption towards an ?external vendor? model, which is also a type of outsourcing.

Most of the discussions around cloud?s impact on outsourcing services take a monolithic view of the industry. The focus is to take an extreme position, such as ?outsourcing is dead?, or perform a very broad analysis based on the evolving role of CIOs, changing demand in enterprise IT, cloud eating into traditional sourcing, etc. This makes for good reading but is not necessarily a thoughtful analysis of the real impact. The need of the hour is to drill down into each type of global sourcing service and analyze the impact of cloud delivery models.

To analyze the impact of cloud delivery models on globally-sourced services, one needs to understand both of these in the right context. For IT outsourcing and the impact of cloud, there is a need to differentiate between the type of services delivered such as application development, application implementation, application maintenance, ?keep the lights on? infrastructure services, service-level driven managed services, and transformational services. Cloud delivery models will have a spectrum and not a binary impact on this market. Different services, providers, business models, and investments will see different opportunities and challenges.

One major ?non-technology? challenge from cloud models is the shifting of budgets from a typical IT department to businesses. Everest Group and Cloud Connect Enterprise Cloud Adoption Survey indicate an increasing role for business users in deciding IT spending. As outsourcing providers have access generally to IT and procurement departments, they will witness significant challenges to penetrate the business side of a buyer in accessing ?business IT? budget. Moreover, enterprise IT shops that have so far not outsourced, may directly leverage a cloud service, reducing the potential role of an outsourcing provider. To pre-empt this, the provider may need to offer integrated cloud and outsourcing services.

The relevance of cloud models should also be seen from newer or existing investments the buyers make in enterprise IT. For transforming the existing investments (e.g., ERP, CRM, other business applications, and infrastructure) to the cloud, it is difficult to believe that typical global sourcing buyers will prefer any other vendor over the enterprise-class providers. For example, if they have to transform ERP platforms to a cloud infrastructure, they would generally prefer a renowned enterprise class ERP and cloud service provider over a pure-play cloud hosting provider.

Must See HDTV (November 26th - December 2nd)

Must See HDTV November 26th December 2nd

It's that time friends, the weekend when we say goodbye to the college football regular season. While there's plenty of NBA, college basketball, college hockey, and NHL action to tide us over, it just won't be the same until the bowls get into full swing. TNT is bringing back a couple of shows from fall hiatus, and we've got a few Blu-ray 3D titles hitting shelves. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

The Walking Dead
After an often lackluster second season (until the finale), AMC's hit show has been firing on all cylinders since then and we're actually disappointed that we're wrapping up the first half of season three so soon. Between goings-on at the jail and in town, there's sure to be plenty of action, people choosing sides and, oh yeah, zombies.
(AMC, December 2nd, 9PM)

College Football
This weekend the college football regular season comes to a close, with several conference championships and a couple of other rivalry games that will play into bowl selections. We'll find out who will be joining Notre Dame in the Championship Game once the SEC title has been awarded, and where everyone else is going Sunday night. Whether you love the current system or love to hate it, cherish it all just one more time, since next year we're going to a playoff and fans will have to be angry about a slightly different set of circumstances.

MLS Cup
While much of the news is about David Beckham's departure from MLS after this weekend, there's still a game to be played. LA takes on houston Saturday afternoon, so if you prefer your football played mostly with one's feet, you know where to tune in.

BofA's Legal Hassles Continue - Zacks.com

Bank of America Corporation?s (BAC - Analyst Report) legal woes are far from over considering the onslaught of lawsuits related to the risky mortgage securities. Last week, CIFG Assurance North America Inc, a bond issuer, sued BofA for fraudulent representations and breach of contract over insurance policies tied to residential mortgage backed securities (RMBS), according to a Bloomberg Report. ?

The lawsuit is based on CIFG?s five financial guaranty insurance policies that pertain to the two-structure transactions that were arranged by BofA. These were backed by twenty-two risky RMBS.

CIFG alleged that BofA was well aware of the perils associated with the RMBS offerings. BofA had failed to sell these securities as an underwriter, and therefore was left with too many of these risky securities in its books.

In order to get rid of these securities, BofA issued misleading statements that concealed the associated risks and convinced CIFG to provide insurance worth over $150 million to make them marketable to investors. As a result of these fraudulent representations by BofA, CIFG will have to shell out nearly $170 million in damages. CIFG has filed lawsuit in the New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan.

Apart from BofA, CIFG has pressed similar charges against couple of other financial institutions in the last three years. These include last month?s $$277 million lawsuit against GreenPoint Mortgage Funding Inc. and last year?s $275 million legal charge against The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS - Analyst Report).

In addition to this, BofA faces several other charges related to the sale of defective mortgage securities. Earlier this month, investors including Phoenix Light SF Ltd prosecuted BofA along with its unit, Countrywide Financial, over the sale of $261 million worth of flawed residential mortgage-backed securities using misleading statements.

This led to huge losses and now investors are seeking compensation of nearly $122.2 million from BofA and Countrywide. This case is also filed in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan.

Earlier in September, Phoenix Light had dragged BofA, along with JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM - Analyst Report), Goldman Sachs as well as Ace Securities ? a wing of Deutsche Bank AG (DB - Snapshot Report) ? to court for losses suffered over faulty mortgage-backed securities. JPMorgan and Goldman are encountering a $1.8 billion lawsuit, whereas Ace Securities is facing a $300 million charge. BofA has been sued for losses amounting $36.6 million over $69.8 million worth of MBS.

BofA continues to face lawsuits related to the sale of faulty RMBS. This has resulted in huge litigation costs for the company, which will have a profound impact on its financials. However, on the positive side, the ill-effects of these are likely to be eliminated by the gradually strengthening fundamentals of the company.

BofA currently retains a Zacks #3 Rank, which translates into a short-term Hold rating. We believe that on account of such litigation overhangs, there is little possibility of any upward estimate revisions; hence, the stock is expected to hold its current rank. We also maintain a long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock.

Holidays Serve as Wake-Up Call That Local Elderly Family ...

By Mel Fabrikant ???Monday, November 12, 2012, 11:23 AM EST???

?10 Holiday Warning Signs? Your Senior Is In Trouble
(November 2012) - The holiday season may be one of the few times local families get together and realize their elderly loved ones are in deep trouble and need immediate help. Adult children who don?t live nearby often come home to holiday heartbreak with deteriorating relatives they aren?t prepared to handle. So this holiday, the family might gather around the kitchen table ? not only for turkey and treats, but also for a talk?a big talk?that maps out a plan to care for aging relatives.

That?s why Senior Helpers, one of the largest in-home senior care companies with caregivers in our city, advises families with the ?10 Holiday Warning Signs Seniors Need Help.?
?This Thanksgiving and Christmas, thousands of adult children will be shocked to come home to elderly relatives who are lethargic and forgetful. They?ll see a messy house, bills piling up, the joy of the season clouded with the realization that elderly relatives are struggling and can?t make it alone,? says Peter Ross, CEO and co-founder of Senior Helpers, one of the largest in-home senior care companies with offices in our city with highly trained caregivers specializing in dementia and Alzheimer?s care. ?This is the time to map out a care plan for aging relatives and that plan should include hiring caregivers who can help ease the burden for families.?
Holiday Heartbreak
Two years ago at Christmas, Truly Bracken and her brother came home to Charlotte, North Carolina and realized their 83-year-old mother Margaret shouldn?t be staying home alone anymore. During the holiday visit, on a normal stroll outside, Margaret lost her balance and fell.
?Mother didn?t trip on anything. She just lost her balance and took a bad fall,? says Truly. ?Luckily she didn?t break any bones, but seeing her fall prompted a family discussion about mother?s care.?
Truly and her brother both live far away, so they brought in a Senior Helpers caregiver to stay with their mom all day, 7 days a week.
?It?s a huge relief knowing the caregivers are with Mother because they?re so knowledgeable and caring,? says Truly. ?Mother feels like they?re friends.?
Senior Helpers? ?10 Holiday Warning Signs Senior Loved Ones Need Help?*
? Poor eating habits resulting in weight loss, no appetite, or missed meals.
? Neglected hygiene - wearing dirty clothes, body odor, neglected nails and teeth.
? Neglected home - it?s not as clean or sanitary as you remember growing up.
? Inappropriate behavior - acting loud, quiet, paranoid, or making phone calls at all hours.
? Changed relationship patterns that friends or neighbors have noticed.
? Burns or injuries resulting from weakness, forgetfulness, or misuse of alcohol or medications.
? Decreased participation in activities such as attending the senior center, book club, or church.
? Scorched pots and pans showing forgetfulness for dinner cooking on the stove.
? Unopened mail, newspaper piles, missed appointments.
? Mishandled finances such as losing money, paying bills twice, or hiding money.
?When family members get together, it?s great to finally recognize and see firsthand that their elderly loved ones may have a problem,? says Ross. ?But conflict often surfaces when family members have to agree on a solution, especially when the senior has dementia or Alzheimer?s and family members don?t know how to handle it. That?s why Senior Helpers offers a Holiday Family Meeting Guide to discuss the major sticking points. As part of that plan, we strongly encourage the family to hire a trained caregiver to get elderly loved ones the proper care. Our 10 Holiday Warning Signs and Holiday Family Meeting Guide initiatives are both part of our dementia and Alzheimer?s program called the Senior Gems?.?
Senior Helpers? ?Holiday Family Meeting Guide?:
? The person leading the meeting can be the elderly relative who anticipates needing care in the future. If that person already needs care, an adult child, friend, or relative can lead.
? Encourage discussion and get input from everyone. Make sure everyone makes their feelings known.
? Discuss money. Who will pay? How? If the money is coming from the elderly relative?s estate, who will be the executor?
? At the end of the meeting, everyone present must commit to support the plan.
? Write it down. Good intentions are often forgotten over time and family members must have their responsibilities right in front of them.
We can provide local senior care experts and possibly a local family to tell this story. It?s a great piece to put in the can for the holidays when you have limited staff.

Glitch prevents trade in over 200 stocks on the NYSE

NEW YORK (Reuters) - NYSE Euronext suspended trading in over 200 stocks on the New York Stock Exchange on Monday due to a technical problem with a server, although the stocks in question continued trading on other markets.

There were no closing auctions in the affected stocks and a list of the official closing prices for the securities, based on the consolidated last sale, was distributed via email and NYSE's website.

The NYSE first alerted traders it was having problems with one of its cash equity matching engines at 9:38 a.m. and it said it would not publish quotes on a total of 216 stocks, including CVS Caremark Corp and Lazard Ltd.

Nasdaq OMX Group Inc, BATS Global Markets and Direct Edge exchanges stopped sending orders to the NYSE, declaring "self help" against the exchange.

"Orders were coming in, but those who were issuing the orders were not getting their confirmations or their reports, so we felt it was best to zero it out, if you will, and then to suspend trading of those stocks on our market," said Rich Adamonis, an NYSE spokesman.

The NYSE said any open orders should be considered canceled.

Adamonis said the server issues were still being investigated at around 3 p.m., but added that they came as the stock symbols were being moved over to a new trading platform.

The NYSE said it "anticipates a normal trading day in all securities" on Tuesday.

The transatlantic exchange operator is in the process of moving all of its markets - including bonds, options, futures and cash equities - in the United States and Europe to a universal electronic trading platform.

The New York-based company's European markets have been fully integrated with the new system and the exchange is now in the process of moving over its roughly 3,800 U.S. cash equities issues to the new platform, with about 800 having migrated so far, Adamonis said.

The migration will continue to be rolled out through the rest of the year, he added.

NYSE shares closed up 1.4 percent at $23.26.

(AP) ? About 15,000 protesters converged on the Greek capital's main square outside Parliament on Sunday, ahead of a vote by lawmakers on the 2013 budget which would once more cut pensions and salaries so Greece can qualify for its next vital batch of rescue loans.

Lawmakers were to vote at midnight or shortly after, and the legislation is expected to pass. The vote comes four days after a separate bill of deep spending cuts and tax hikes for 2013-14 squeaked past with a narrow majority in the 300-member Parliament following deep disagreements among the members of Greece's three-party coalition government.

Approval of the austerity bill and the budget are key steps toward persuading Greece's international creditors ? the International Monetary Fund and the other European countries that use the euro ? to release the next ?31.5 billion installment of its bailout loans. Without it, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has said Greece will run out of euros on Friday.

But German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, whose country is the largest single contributor to Greece's bailout, said in a German newspaper interview published Sunday that international creditors won't be rushed when it comes to approving the loan disbursement.

"We all ... want to help Greece, but we won't be put under pressure," Schaeuble told weekly newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

Schaeuble said the so-called troika of debt inspectors likely won't deliver their report on Greece's reform program by Monday. Once the report is submitted to the European Central Bank, European Union and International Monetary Fund, it will have to be studied carefully, he said.

He said Germany's parliament must have the chance to "check, discuss and decide" on the release of the funds.

In Athens, protesters waved banners with anti-austerity slogans such as "IMF get out" as they milled around Syntagma Square outside Parliament in a peaceful rally.

During Wednesday's parliamentary vote on the austerity bill, tens of thousands marched through the streets until the demonstration degenerated into violence. Hundreds of rioters threw rocks, chunks of marble and gasoline bombs at police, who responded with large amounts of tear gas and made the first use of water cannon in the Greek capital in decades.

In an opinion poll published in the Sunday newspaper To Vima, 66 percent opposed the new austerity measures, but 52 percent said the government, which emerged from June elections, should be given more time to handle the economic crisis.

According to the poll, 86 percent of the respondents are facing financial difficulties after more than four years of recession, during which the economy has shrunk by a quarter and unemployment has soared to more than 25 percent.

The poll showed the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) party, which came second in June's elections and is the main opposition party, ahead of coalition leader center-right New Democracy by nearly 3 percentage points. The extreme right-wing nationalist Golden Dawn party continued its strong showing with more than one in 10 respondents preferring it.

New Democracy's coalition government partners, the socialist PASOK and small Democratic Left, would get 7.5 and 4.6 percent respectively.

The poll involved 1,017 respondents with a margin of error of 3.07 percent.

27 inmates killed in Sri Lanka prison shootout

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) ? A shootout between rioting prisoners and security forces at a prison in Sri Lanka's capital killed at least 27 inmates, while police said Saturday that they arrested five prisoners who had managed to escape and were searching for others.

Another 42 people were wounded in the shootout Friday between inmates and army and police commandos that broke out after the rioting prisoners briefly took control of at least part of the Welikada prison in Colombo. The situation at the prison had returned to normal by Saturday morning.

"The prison is now totally under our control," said Sri Lanka's Commissioner General of Prisons P.W. Kodippili.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe, director of the Colombo National Hospital, said the bodies of 16 inmates were at his hospital.

Kodippili said that security forces had found the bodies of 11 other inmates inside the prison premises, and that the total number of deaths stood at 27.

Twenty-three inmates who were injured in the clash were receiving treatment at the hospital, Jasinghe said. Thirteen police officers, four soldiers, a prison guard and a passer-by also were being treated there for injuries.

Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said five inmates who had escaped from the prison, which was the site of another riot earlier this year, were arrested.

Kodippili declined to say how many inmates may have escaped, but said search operations were under way to find others who may have fled.

Jayakody said the fighting began when police commandos went to the prison to conduct a search and were attacked by inmates hurling stones. He declined to provide more information. Officials often conduct raids for narcotics and communication devices.

An Associated Press photographer saw prisoners waving rifles atop the prison's roof Friday night.

Other prisoners piled into a three-wheeled vehicle and began driving toward a main city road before security forces outside the prison opened fire. The vehicle stopped, and three unmoving bodies could be seen.

Dozens of security officers then entered the prison, and volleys of gunfire rang out. Prisoners could be heard screaming, "Stop shooting!"

Army troops were called in later to help control the situation.

Kodippili said the inmates had broken into the prison's two armories during the riot and taken weapons stored there. The inmates opened fire at police commandos, who shot back.

He said that security forces had so far recovered 76 weapons taken by the prisoners and that six more weapons were still missing.

A clash between inmates and guards at the same prison last January wounded 28 people. Those prisoners were protesting the authorities' move to curtail drug smuggling into the facility.

A New Earth, Awakening to Your Lifes Purpose | Eckhart Tolle

A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life?s Purpose | Eckhart Tolle

    Posted by Viola Woolcott

I found this book a wonderful read. And I have not only read it the once. Actually, I?m not sure how many times I have read it (and I will read it again), but each time I do, I discover more nuggets of wisdom and inspiration. In my opinion this book is even better than The Power of Now, which had a very positive effect on my life.

A New Earth takes you even deeper down the rabbit hole, reaching out to you on many levels, taking you closer to a state of oneness ? if you allow it to. This book is written in a way that will perhaps appeal to more people.

A New Earth is written with the purpose of helping you grasp how to live in the moment, the NOW, and be at one with all beings. Tolle provides the spiritual background for anyone to make their own life ? and therefore the world ? better and more meaningful. Modern ideas of ego and entitlement, self and society are shattered. Tolle exposes the fears that hang over us all and shows how each of us can find happiness and health through a series of simple, life-affirming steps:

    >> understanding the illusory self
    >> going beyond ego
    >> the secret of happiness
    >> learning how to stop carrying the past
    >> discovering the joy of being
    >> the pain body

People have always been searching, for enlightenment, truth etc, and during what must be one of the most precipitous times known to man, Eckhart Tolle brings inspiration and hope to the reader not by providing answers, but by encouraging people to look within themselves and discovering their own truth. This is a book to study, not just to merely read! This is no ordinary self-help book but a beautifully written master piece. A stunning journey of self-enlightenment, stripping away the illusions we live by, providing a new basis for personal spirituality and self-improvement.

    Very highly recommended!!!

OK, app, what should I wear to this wedding?

WEDDINGS, first dates, job interviews... the days of agonising over what to wear may soon be over.

Magic Closet, a clothing-selection system developed at the Chinese Academy of Science and the National University of Singapore, suggests clothing from your own wardrobe based on the event you plan to attend. First, it catalogues your clothes, using a Microsoft Kinect camera to identify defining features such as sleeve length, colour and collar type. Then, when you ask it for an outfit, the software selects the best matches from its database of 25,000 outfit images, skimmed from online shopping websites and photo-sharing site Flickr - and presents pictures of its selected items of your clothing.

Those database images had been fed into Amazon's Mechanical Turk labour market, where online workers categorised the outfits by attributes like collar type. They also determined if the pictured clothes were more suitable for some occasions - a first date, say - than others, such as a wedding. An attribute or occasion was deemed legitimate when more than half the workers agreed.

As well as help people decide what to wear, the system can also help online shoppers find clothes that go with what they already own. The team is now working on adding personal taste to the model.

L.A. sales tax hike could cause a dip in business, report says ...

City Council President Herb Wesson has proposed a half-cent sales tax increase in the city of Los Angeles. An analysis found that such an increase might result in a dip in sales within the city.A half-cent sales tax proposed by Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson could have a modest but negative effect on sales activity, with the biggest impact felt by sellers of building supplies, according to an analysis released Friday.

Beacon Economics, a consulting firm advising L.A. leaders, projected a decrease in sales of up to 1.3% if voters approve the tax March 5, with no effect at all for restaurants, supermarkets and service stations. However, the sale of building materials -- among the most expensive purchases -- could decline as much as 3.9%, the report said.

Jordan Levine, an economist with Beacon, said that for the city, the benefits from the increased taxes would outweigh any harm to L.A.?s economy. But his firm also suggested that a tax hike could create a ?border city problem,? with consumers turning to adjacent communities with major shopping destinations and lower tax rates. Those cities include Pasadena, Glendale and Burbank, all of which border L.A.

Los Angeles ?must consider the possibility that if consumer spending is quite high in neighboring municipalities ... consumers near those neighboring municipalities may choose to go outside of the city to spend,? the report said.

The firm's findings did not deter the council?s Rules, Elections and Intergovernmental Relations Committee, which voted unanimously Friday to endorse the tax. But they troubled Stuart Waldman, president of the Valley Industry and Commerce Assn., who worried that construction companies could look outside of Los Angeles for their supplies.

?If somebody?s spending $10,000 to fix up a house, or several hundred thousand dollars to build a house, all that sales tax adds up,? he said. ?And if it?s easy for them to make a five-mile round-trip drive? to a city next to Los Angeles, ?then they will.?

So far, business groups have not taken a position on the sales tax measure, which comes up for a vote Tuesday. A sales tax that generates $215.5 million a year could bring a decline from lost business activity of up to $7 million, leaving the city with $208.5 million, the report said.

Wesson last week called that loss minor, saying it pales in comparison with the good it would do for the city budget. A $216-million shortfall has been projected for next year, and Police Chief Charlie Beck has warned that without a sales tax increase, the city might have to eliminate 500 police officers.

Skyfall ? Careers advice as to why cyber security matters! | E ...

Yesterday morning, at the awards ceremony for the Cyber Security Challenge ?Can you talk security? competition, our BT host described Skyfall as a blockbuster careers advice film for the brightest and best of the younger generation. He quoted the new ?Q? describing?James Bond as a dinosaur??I can do more damage on my lap top in my pajamas before my first cup of Earl Grey?than you do in a whole year.???

Visit the Skyfall website and watch the clip of James Bond meeting his new Quartermaster. Those who bleat about the lack of realistic careers guidance should focus on joining up the dots on how Q got his job. They?should?also watch his chagrin when he learns that?an old-time hacker (same vintage as James Bond) breaks his network security wide open. One of the supposed teenage hackers arrested during the investagation described in?Misha Glenny?s Dark Market was in his 60s,?waiting for a hip replacement and asked?to put his teeth in before he was taken to the police station.

But Skyfall?does much more. It is also covers the?three top tips that are missing from the CESG Executive Guidance on Cyber Security (and all other?guides produced by mainstream security experts):

    1) Do not put all the?crown jewels in one database: whatever the claimed security etc.

    2) Do not link all your networks together: whatever the claimed security etc.

    3) Take good care of potentially disaffected former employees. They are your biggest weakness

CISOs who claim their Board does not understand the importance of cybersecurity?should tell them to watch Skyfall with their grandchildren. The CISO?should then be ready to lead a?discussion?on?what ?M? should have done?in order to go out of office?with pride ? instead of seeing her reputation for competance trashed and?having to retreat to a communications not spot to die in the arms of her favourite, but now ageing,?toyboy.

To help out future generations, USAID invests to educate teachers ...

    KARACHI:?

The importance of education is not only limited to students but also for those who impart knowledge. With this thought in mind, the United States aims to strengthen education roots in Pakistan by investing in higher education and teacher training programmes in the country.

Jo Lesser-Oltheten, the education office director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), shared these views on Thursday.

She was attending a ceremony where 155 students, who have enrolled into two-year associate (ADE) and four-year Bachelors programmes in education (BEd Hons), were awarded Rs20,000 each in the form of scholarships. The programmes are a part of USAID?s ?Teachers Education Project?.

USAID hopes that graduates of the programme will work as teachers at schools in their respective districts. It has partnered with the provincial government to launch them at 11 colleges and two public sector universities in Sindh, including the Karachi University. However, they are not only limited to Sindh, as 2,800 prospective teachers have enrolled in the ADE programme at 86 colleges in the country, and another 1,200 have joined the BEd (Hons) programme at 12 universities. Students in ADE programme will graduate by the end of next year, while those in the BEd (Hons) programme will graduate three years later.

With reference to the US government?s recent efforts in training teachers in the country, Lesser-Oltheten said that the US had always been committed to higher education in Pakistan. ?I feel that the focus [on teacher improvement] has intensified over the last couple of years, as there is a recognition that young people of Pakistan, if [properly] trained, will inform, instruct and inspire future generations.?

When asked whether the programme will continue once USAID?s collaboration with the programmes end in September 2013, Lesser-Oltheten said that the provincial education departments and the Higher Education Commission have assumed their control. She added that USAID was scheduled to launch another programme before September 2013.

    Students? complaints

A number of enrolled students, however, appear to be dissatisfied with the state of affairs at their respective colleges and universities. Aazeen Islam, a student at Karachi University complained that uncertainty surrounded their future as the Sindh government has yet to announce a service structure for them.

?We do not have permanent classrooms to study, while the construction of a separate teachers? education department has been put on hold,? complained Bushra Asif, who has enrolled in BEd (Hons) programme at KU. ?We have to move from department to department to attend classes.?

Saima Shafiq, Mohamamd Fahad and Salman Ahmed, who have enrolled in the ADE programme at Government College of Education in Mirpurkhas, complained about shortage of books at their college?s library.

Lesser-Oltheten, however, is confident that reforms are in the pipeline and that graduates of these programmes will be hired in BS-17 or higher grades. She added that USAID will build teaching faculties for education across the country, with one in KU and another in Sindh University. ?These faculties will train the next generations of teachers,? she said.

USAID currently sponsors 36 Pakistani doctoral candidates in education at American universities, said Lesser-Oltheten, with another 60 doctoral students expected to soon follow them. The USAID official says that these students are expected to come back and join their alma mater in contributing to the standard of education here in Pakistan.

Provincial education secretary, Mukhtar Ahmed Soomro, was the chief guest on the occasion. He reiterated that the government would provide BS-16 and 17 jobs at public schools to the students as soon as they graduate. ?I believe that people will be surprised to find public schools with such highly qualified teachers,? said Soomro.

Square Feet: Geothermal Energy Advocates Hope Systems Get a Second Look

Advocates for geothermal energy say that the path of destruction cut by Hurricane Sandy, which unearthed fuel tanks, ravaged cooling towers and battered air-conditioners, has already persuaded some building owners to switch to geothermal systems that use underground pipes to harness the earth?s energy for heating and cooling buildings.

    Andrea Mohin/The New York Times

The geothermal energy system at the Brooklyn Children?s Museum, installed in 2007 at a cost of $675,000.

?We?re seeing dozens of these half-empty and empty oil tanks just popping up all over the place in the flooded areas,? said David E. Reardon, the manager of geothermal drilling for the Miller Environmental Group, an environmental response, remediation and restoration services company based in Calverton on Long Island that has been involved in poststorm environmental cleanup throughout the region.

?Those tanks become buoyant in all that water,? he said. But since geothermal systems don?t use fossil fuels or mechanical systems that are exposed to the elements, Mr. Reardon said, he started fielding calls from people asking for estimates on geothermal systems just days after the storm. ?Often it?s a case where they were considering doing it, but were waiting for something to finally no longer be able to be repaired,? he said, and the storm has ended that wait.

Geothermal energy systems, common in countries like Iceland and China, use the constant temperature of the earth to heat and cool buildings.

Geothermal wells are dug to a depth where the earth regulates the temperature of water or a liquid circulating through the system. Geothermal systems may require one well or dozens to regulate a building?s temperature, depending on the size of a building and type of system installed. While the systems are called wells, they are actually an underground network of pipes connected to heat pumps to circulate water or some other liquid.

Because digging geothermal wells can be expensive and logistically difficult, the systems have been slow to catch on in New York City. Yet, according to the Rockefeller Foundation and DB Climate Change Advisors, ?buildings consume approximately 40 percent of the world?s primary energy and are responsible for 40 percent of global carbon emissions,? said Jack DiEnna, the executive director of the Geothermal Heat Pump National and International Initiative, based in Washington.

Installing a geothermal system can significantly reduce a building?s carbon footprint, and over the last decade, the number of geothermal heat pump systems in the city has grown steadily. More geothermal systems are installed in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania than anywhere else in the United States.

Most systems are being installed in institutional buildings, multifamily residential buildings and relatively small commercial buildings. There have been systems installed by several prominent organizations and sites in the city, including the American Institute of Architects, the Times Square TKTS Booth, the Brooklyn Children?s Museum, the Queens Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo Lion House. In some of the outer boroughs and the suburbs, geothermal systems for single-family homes are also becoming more popular.

In all, more than 100 geothermal projects are in operation in the five boroughs, and about 90 percent of those projects are what are known as closed loop vertical bore systems, Mr. DiEnna said. A closed loop system is sealed from the ground and liquids are reused within the system, while an open loop system has discharge water it releases into a ground well or surface water.

Because building sites in the city, particularly Manhattan, tend to be small, the wells tend to be vertical, just like the buildings. Manhattan is not an ideal location for geothermal heat pump systems, because the wells must go so deep ? to depths of roughly 1,500 feet ? to reach the volume of land necessary to provide a constant temperature. In other areas with more available land, a geothermal heat pump system can be more spread out and much shallower, making it less costly to dig.

Elsewhere, larger scale geothermal projects known as enhanced geothermal systems have raised serious concerns because these larger power-production projects involve drilling wells down to tens of thousands of feet and fracturing the bedrock so water can be injected to create steam.

A few years ago, a project in Switzerland was shut down after it caused small earthquakes, and another project in Northern California was also stopped because of similar concerns. But the static, small-scale geothermal heat pump systems installed in the New York area bear little relation to these projects, said Daniel P. Schrag, a professor of geology and director of the Center for the Environment at Harvard.

Park Facing East During the Winter and the Sun Will Defrost Your Windshield

Park Facing East During the Winter and the Sun Will Defrost Your WindshieldIt's winter for most in the United States, and if you're driving you get the fun chore of defrosting your windshield each morning. That is, unless you follow the advice of one redditor who realized you can let the sun do the work for you:

Just noticed this one a few days ago when my windshield was completely clear and the guy on the other side of the street was scraping his car. Hopefully this will help keep you out of that bitter winter cold for a few extra minutes!

This is a pretty simple tip that may be obvious to some in cold winter climates, but I grew up in Minnesota and never knew. While you probably can't park facing East 100% of the time, if you have the ability in the cold winter you should. It'll save you some frustration and provide a little added comfort when you hop in your car each frozen morning.
