Non-standard spacing in between floor joists? - DIY Home ...

SBay: Sorry I wasn't more clear. If you change from 16" on center you will waist plywood as the end will not land on framing and would have to be cut. If you are heating or cooling insulating the floor is a good idea. You do want air below the insulation so some kind of wire mesh should be facing the ground to keep critters out of the insulation. What we do we a shed like yours is place the timbers in the ground where you need them straight and level, they will absorb moisture so you want a 6 mil poly to protect the rest of the framing from moisture Then we build the floor beside it, make sure it's square and attach wire mesh and then flip it over on top of the timbers. Attach it to 1 beam with treated nails or screws ( the treatment in the wood eats reguler nails and screws).
Check your frame for square and then attach to the other beam, now your ready for insulation. ( Measure on angle from corner to corner and compare to oposite corners, adjust until both measure the same)
Keep in mind that lumber is not cut to length except for studs so all framing bits and peices have to be cut to length ) a 12ft 2x6 will be 1/4 to 3/4" to long.
Dropping 3/4" is just a term used to make sure plywood fits the layout. So when you lay out the endframing members for floors and walls, put the two peices together and hook your tape to one end and mark it at 15 1/4, 31 1/4 , 47 1/4 and so on, this will make the 96" plywood land half way on the joist or stud.
For floor plywood, houses are built with 5/8 tongue and grove, 5/8 should be enough for your floor and tongue and groove is a must. There will be tips for that too.

The Algarve: Not just for golf-mad pensioners | CNN Travel

The southernmost region of Portugal, the Algarve has a reputation for being a retirement home for wealthy British pensioners.

While this is partly the case, the Algarve has moved into the 21st century with a more varied outlook on tourism.

Thanks to golf-mad Brit retirees, the region has become a serious golfing destination, winning awards as Europe's best place to swing a club.

But this delightful area with southern and western Atlantic coasts, and more than 300 warm to hot sunny days each year, has more to offer than the most maddening game ever invented.

The region

Fal?sia Beach, one of hundreds in the Algarve, unspoiled and often empty. The Algarve is a haven for sailors, with seven marinas along its southern Atlantic coast; a world class surfing destination; and a great place for swimming, deep sea fishing, body-boarding, diving and kite-surfing.

On land there's motor racing, tennis, athletics and skydiving. Many of Europe's top soccer teams stay in the Algarve for pre-season training.

When I stayed at the Hotel Quinta do Lago, the Libyan national soccer team was there preparing for a friendly match. OK, they're not Barcelona or Manchester United, but the Libyan team proves the area's worth on the national football circuit.

There are more than 100 beaches along the 200-kilometer coastline and a plethora of luxury spas.

Local heritage reflects the various peoples who have inhabited the Algarve -- Arabs, Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Celts.

The Algarve also has a reputation for some of the best seafood in the world, reflected in the excellent restaurants in the region, which has the highest number of Michelin stars in Portugal.

It's also a place for environmental tourism, centred around the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, with its 60 kilometers (37 miles) of islands and channels creating a birdwatchers' paradise.

For a completely back to nature eco-tourist vacation, you can get away from modern civilization and backpack along the Via Algarviana.

The 300-kilometer (186 miles) footpath begins in Alcoutim near the Spanish border and ends at Cabo de S?o Vicente, where the southern and western Algarve coasts meet. The path travels through towns that still live according to the traditions of the rural world.

You can pitch your tent wherever you want or stay in local tavernas.

There's plenty of nightlife, especially in Vilamoura, the largest resort town in Europe, and Faro, the region's capital.

Food

Terrace at the Sea Breeze restaurant at the Hotel Quinta do Lago. In the Algarve seafood is king.

Caught daily in the Atlantic, crab, clams, king prawns, sea bass, sea bream, cod and other ocean delicacies are guaranteed to be superb.

Reflecting the region's Moorish heritage (five centuries of Islamic occupation),?Moroccan restaurants serve chicken couscous and traditional lamb tajine.

There are restaurants for every budget, from fast food to Japanese and, of course, Mediterranean.

As Dunas, Martinhal Resort: At the excellent As Dunas restaurant at the Martinhal Resort in Sagre, two people can have a lovely dinner including wine for less than ?40 (US$52).

Seafood, fresh fish and traditional Algarvean dishes adorn the menu; set among the sand dunes of Martinhal beach,?the location is superb.

Activities

The fourth green at Onyria Palmares. These looks won't kill, but they might frustrate. Golf: The Algarve has a justified reputation as mainland Europe's finest golf destination.

From Onyria Palmares in the west through the five superb courses at Vilamoura, San Lorenzo and the Laranjal course at Quinta do Lago, to Monte Rei in the east (where you can see Spain from the fairways), there are more than 30 championship courses in the region.

For details go to www.algarvegolf.net.

Surfing/kite-surfing: Nowhere else in Europe offers year-round great surfing waves in the morning and steady kite-surfing winds in the afternoon like the southwest tip of the Algarve, between Cabo de Sao Vincente and Sagres.

For details on all watersports available in the Algarve go to www.algarve-watersport.com.

Sailing: With the Portuguese history of seafaring and seven marinas along its southern Atlantic coast it's no surprise that the Algarve has sailing in its blood.

Bring your yacht, hire one or just take a pleasure boat cruise along the 200 kilometer coastline.

Land and water sports: Other water sports include kayaking, deep sea fishing, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving.

Land sports include ample tennis courts, motor racing at more than 300 kph (185 mph) on the Algarve racetrak, skydiving or soccer at a variety of sports complexes, horseback riding at the Vilamoura equestrian center, mountain biking or trekking through the Algarve mountains and ordinary road cycling.

Culture: Various peoples have inhabited the Algarve -- Arabs (five centuries of Islamic occupation), Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Celts.

The Algarve is home to 13th-century castles, 16th-century churches, modern museums, local arts and crafts, markets and music, from old folk through new wave.

Nature: From stunning Cabo de Sao Vicente, where the west and south Algarve coasts meet, to the Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim in the east on the Spanish border (and home to one of the largest flamingo habitats in Europe), the Algarve is awash with nature reserves.

The most beautiful is the Parque Natural de Ria Formosa around the region's capital Faro. You can leave civilization behind and rucksack along the 300-kilometer (186 mile) Via Algarviana, a great way to take in the Algarve's natural beauty.

Spa: Here SPA means Sanus Per Algarve ("Health through Algarve") and spa lovers can indulge in aromatherapy, thalassotherapy, sports and therapeutic massages, hot stone therapies, reflexology, yoga or reiki.

You can also visit Caldas de Monchique, a natural spa since Roman times when it was known as Aguas Sagradas (Sacred Waters).

Beach: The Algarve has more than 100 beaches along its 200-kilometer (124 miles) coastline, many of them usually deserted.

Hotels and resorts

Drones to Watch Over US Highways

Drones could help human workers safeguard the 4 million miles of U.S. highways crisscrossing the country. The flying robots could inspect bridges and roads, survey lands with laser mapping, and even alert officials to traffic jams or accidents.

One such project focused on studying the use of drones recently received $74,984 from the Federal Highway Administration and the Georgia Department of Transportation. Researchers plan to spend the next year figuring out how drones could help workers as they go about inspecting and maintaining the safety of public roads and highways.

"Drones could keep workers safer because they won't be going into traffic or hanging off a bridge," said Javier Irizarry, director of the CONECTech Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology. "It would help with physical limitations of the human when doing this kind of work."

Georgia represents one of several states considering how civilian drones could do some jobs for? transportation departments, the police and firefighters. The state is also competing to become one of several flight-test regions for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration ? a step in the FAA's plan to open up U.S. civilian airspace to drones by 2015.

Drones of all sizes and shapes could help safeguard state roads and bridges, Irizarry said. Small drones with cameras might take off vertically from the back of a truck to help inspect a bridge. [Video: RoboBees Design Poses Intriguing Engineering Challenges]

The larger, aircraft-size Reaper or Global Hawk drones could spend hours surveying traffic conditions or carry light detection and ranging (LIDAR) equipment that can map terrain with millions of laser pulses. That could potentially replace the expensive use of manned helicopters doing the same job.

Irizarry gave the example of the spherical drones that mapped a huge alien base in the 2012 science fiction film "Prometheus" as an analogy for how today's larger drones could aid in above-ground laser mapping. He has also enlisted the help of Eric Johnson, an aerospace engineer at Georgia Tech, to figure out the best role for drones.

"We're going to look at the different divisions that [DOT] has and see how they do things like surveying, safety monitoring or using traffic cameras," Irizarry told TechNewsDaily. "Maybe they could be using drone technology for a similar purpose."

But the human factor also matters. Georgia Tech researchers will spend the next year studying the best control schemes or interfaces for human workers to deploy drones ? probably regular video displays rather than more futuristic augmented-reality goggles or technology, Irizarry said. They'll also consider how to retrain human workers if drones end up taking over some jobs.

Cornell University Athletics - Squash Makes Pivotal Ivy League Trip ...

ITHACA, N.Y. ? The squash teams will return to Ivy League play this weekend, taking on Dartmouth at noon Saturday before making the trip to the southeast to take on Harvard at noon Sunday.
?
The sixth-ranked Big Red men's team (11-2, 2-1 Ivy League) is coming off an eventful week which started with a 6-3 victory over fifth-ranked Rochester on Wednesday at Belkin International Squash Courts. No. 2 Trinity then handed Cornell its second loss of the season, but the Big Red still figures to move up to fifth in the next edition of College Squash Association's national rankings by virtue of its mid-week victory over the Yellowjackets.
?
Senior Nick Sachvie and sophomore Aditya Jagtap both won their matches last week at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Sophomore Ryan Todd has a team-leading 11 victories for the Big Red, primarily from the middle of the lineup, one ahead of freshman Graham Dietz, who typically competes a couple spots lower in the order.
?
Dartmouth (5-5, 1-2) is ranked eighth in the nation, coming off a narrow 5-4 loss to Rochester last Sunday. The Big Red has won its last six meetings against the Big Green over the last four years, including an 8-1 decision at home on Feb. 4, 2012.
?
Harvard (10-1, 2-1) is currently ranked third after defeating Western Ontario and Amherst at the Pioneer Round Robin on Jan. 19. The Crimson's only loss on the season came the weekend prior, when defending national champion Princeton earned a 5-4 decision on its home courts on Jan. 13. Harvard holds a dominating 43-2 advantage in the all-time series, with the Big Red's two victories coming at Belkin on Dec. 6, 2008 and Dec. 4, 2010. Cornell's two losses to Harvard last season were both by a score of 5-4.
?
The Big Red women's team (9-2) retained its No. 6 ranking from the CSA after suffering a heart-breaking 5-4 loss to No. 2 Trinity last Sunday. Rachel Au, Laura Caty and Jaime Laird each had five-game victories, which ? when combined with Jessenia Pacheco's four-game win at the No. 2 spot ? had the Big Red one point away from its first-ever victory against the Bantams before the visitors swept the final rotation to escape with the win.
?
Freshman Abbey Foster and senior co-captain Maggie Remsen are tied for the team lead with nine victories apiece, one ahead of Au and Pacheco ? the latter of which is a perfect 8-0 on the campaign from the top third of the order.
?
The Big Green's women's team (4-5, 0-3), like the men, is ranked eighth. Cornell has won five straight in the series, though the last three have been decided by a razor-thin 5-4 margin. The Big Red's No. 1, Danielle Letourneau, won the deciding match in last season's tilt on Feb. 4, 2012 at Belkin. Both meetings the previous year had identical scores, including the seventh-place match at the Howe Cup.
?
Harvard (7-1, 2-1) is the defending national champion, but is currently ranked second in the country after a 5-4 loss to Princeton on Jan. 13. The Crimson
has won all 18 of its matches with Cornell in the programs' history, including a 9-0 victory on Feb. 5, 2012 at Belkin. Sophomore Amanda Sobhy is top-ranked player in the country.
?
Both the Cornell men's and women's teams will then return to Ithaca for a Feb. 5 afternoon match against Hobart and William Smith, respectively, at Belkin.

Build Muscle Overnight: Picking the Best Bedtime SnacksconFITdent

Before you prepare yourself to hit the hay, be sure you are receiving adequate nutrition. Proper nutrition is crucial before bed because overnight your body needs a supply of legitimate sources of protein and fats to build muscle, prevent muscle breakdown and promote satiety. Unfortunately, many people think eating and then going to bed will lead to weight gain. However, with the proper balance of nutrients, eating before bed can promote lean mass and actually prevent fat gain.

The problem with late night eating lies in the quality of foods you choose to consume before bed. Poor quality foods such as cookies, brownies or ice cream will eventually lead to sugar crashes and an expanding waist line. They also don?t serve any purpose or value for your body.? Ditch that sleeve of Oreos or that pint of Ben & Jerry?s ice cream. Instead, opt for healthier alternatives to save yourself the excess calories and fat like casein protein shakes, cottage cheese, peanut butter, even Greek yogurt.

When it comes to obtaining a healthy, fit physique, bedtime nutrition plays an important role in conserving lean mass. To slow down digestion and promote a long, slow release of protein throughout the night, your pre-slumber meal should contain a blend of fat and protein. On the other hand, your nighttime snack should be low in carbohydrates to allow proper sleep. Too many simple sugars will spike blood sugar and lead to poor sleep quality.

The importance of slow digesting proteins and fats at nighttime is essential. Having proteins that slowly digest over time like casein will help save precious muscle mass that you?ve worked to build in the gym. Casein protein contains 80 percent milk protein; meanwhile whey protein a faster absorbing protein contains 20 percent. Since whey protein is faster absorbing, it wouldn?t be a good choice before bed. While you?re asleep, the proteins gel in your stomach giving your body a free flow of amino acids throughout the night to help recover your damaged muscles. While casein protein is not as common and hence harder to come by, there are some great sources to include in your nighttime routine.

Build Muscle Overnight #1: Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese is an excellent source of protein to munch on before snoozing.? It offers an optimum blend of amino acids and proteins to help you build muscle and recover throughout the night. On average, cottage cheese will deliver about 11-12 grams of protein per cup while still not breaking the budget.? Feeling as though it may not fill you up or are you looking to add some flavor to your cottage cheese? If you?re looking to prevent hunger pangs and satisfy your taste buds add natural peanut butter, this will help aid in digestion and add more nutrients including seven grams of protein, monounsaturated fat, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Build Muscle Overnight #2: Casein protein shakes

Casein protein shakes are an optimal decision before you hit the hay. If you seem a little bit too tired and may not be in the mood to eat cottage cheese, casein protein shakes are an easy choice while still providing the optimum nutrients. These shakes come in powder form. All you need is a shaker and water or milk. A scoop of casein protein delivers around 24 grams of protein; add milk and you?re looking at a total of 32 grams of protein to help last throughout the night. An ideal choice before bed, this protein will slowly digest in your gut. With a rate of digestion at 6-8 hours, this protein has a lot of benefits and will help preserve and build muscle tissue.

Build Muscle Overnight #3: Greek Yogurt?how-greek-yogurt

If you?re not a fan of cottage cheese or casein protein shakes, Greek yogurt is always an exceptional choice to eat up before going to sleep. Greek yogurt happens to be very high in protein, which helps you feel fuller longer. The common 4-6 ounce serving of this super yogurt dishes out around 12-16 grams of protein and a low dose of carbohydrates, typically only 6-8 grams. However, some of these brands can have misleading information regarding fat and sugar. If you decide to purchase, be smart and avoid the brands high in sugar.? Flavored varieties often have added sugar to sweeten the taste. Instead, add a handful of almonds to your yogurt for more fat and protein while steering clear of excess sugar.

Build Muscle Overnight #4: Natural Peanut Butter

Instead of peanut butters high in fat, sugar and other harmful ingredients, purchase a nutrient dense and much healthier option, natural peanut butter.? Depending on the brand, 1-2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter can provide you with 7 grams of protein, 6 grams of carbohydrates and 9 grams of monosaturated fat. Healthy fats before bed help aid with slower digestion of the breakdown of proteins, keeping your body in an anabolic state which means more muscle growth.

Understanding the importance of bedtime nutrition is the cornerstone to any successful diet. Instead of snacking on Chips Ahoy cookies before bed, opt for healthy foods that serve a purpose and cater your body with vitamins, minerals and proteins instead of a plethora of sugars and calories.

Military getting ready to bring back the airship

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) ? The massive blimp-like aircraft flies but just barely, hovering only a dozen feet off a military hangar floor during flight testing south of Los Angeles.

Still, the fact that the hulking Aeroscraft could fly for just a few minutes represents a step forward in aviation, according to the engineers who developed it. The Department of Defense and NASA have invested $35 million in the prototype because of its potential to one day carry more cargo than any other aircraft to disaster zones and forward military bases.

"I realized that I put a little dot in the line of aviation history. A little dot for something that has never been demonstrated before, now it's feasible," said flight control engineer Munir Jojo-Verge.

The airship is undergoing testing this month at Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, and must go through several more rounds of flight testing before it could be used in a disaster zone or anywhere else. The first major flight test took place Jan. 3.

The biggest challenge for engineers is making sure the airship will be able to withstand high winds and other extreme weather conditions, Jojo-Verge said.

Worldwide Aeros, the company that developed the aircraft, said it also must secure more funding for the next round of flight testing, but is hopeful the Defense Department and others will step in again as investors.

The company says the cargo airship's potential to carry more cargo more efficiently than ever before would provide the U.S. military with an advantage on the battlefield and greater capacity to save more lives during natural disasters.

The lighter-than-air vehicle is not a blimp or a zeppelin because it has a rigid structure made out of ultra-light carbon fiber and aluminum underneath its high-tech Mylar skin. Inside, balloons hold the helium that gives the vehicle lift. Unlike hydrogen, the gas used in the Hindenburg airship that crashed in 1937, helium is not flammable.

The airship functions like a submarine, releasing air to rise and taking in air to descend, said Aeros mechanical engineer Tim Kenny. It can take off vertically, like a helicopter, then change its buoyancy to become heavier than air for landing and unloading.

"It allows the vehicle to set down on the ground. And then when we want to become lighter than air, we release that air and then the vehicle floats and we can allow it to take off," Kenny said.

The project has set abuzz the old hangars at the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin. The structures were built to hold blimps during World War II. Now workers zip around in cherry-pickers, and the airship's silvery surface shines against the warm tones of the aging wood of the walls.

"You could take this vehicle and go to destinations that have been destroyed, where there's no ports, no runways, stuff like that. This vehicle could go in there, offload the cargo even if there's no infrastructure, no landing site for it to land on, this vehicle can unload its whole payload," said Kenny.

Next, Aeros wants to build a full-size 450-foot-long vehicle that can carry 66 tons of payload.

Secret Service dog's death in line of duty

A Belgian Malinois. (Getty Images via CNN)

A Secret Service dog fell to its death in New Orleans over the weekend while performing a sweep of a six-story parking garage. The garage was next to the Ritz Carlton where Vice President Joe Biden was speaking.

The bomb-sniffing dog, a Belgian Malinois, fell from the roof of the parking deck next to the hotel at approximately 6 p.m., New Orleans police told WWL-TV.

Biden was attending a fundraiser for Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu's re-election campaign.

Federal agents rushed the black and brown shepherd to Metairie Small Animal Hospital via motorcade, but veterinarians were unable to revive the dog, WWL reported.

According to CNN, the agency began using canines to detect explosives in 1975:

It uses Belgian Malinois because they are small and have short hair?making it easy for them to work in the heat. They are also very sociable. Each dog and its handler has to complete 20 weeks of training before beginning work, the agency said. When it's time for a dog to retire?usually after about 10 years?it is retired to its handler.

Secret Service spokesman Max Milien told the network the dog's death was a "tragic accident."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Seeking swift action on immigration, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will try to rally public support behind his proposals for giving millions of illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, as well as making improvements to the legal immigration system and border security.

The president will launch his push in a campaign-style event in Las Vegas, a day after a bipartisan group of senators unveiled their own plan for addressing an issue that has languished in Washington for years.

Administration officials said Obama would largely endorse the senators' efforts, though immigration advocates said they expected the president's own proposals to be more progressive than the Senate group's plan, including a faster pathway to citizenship.

The simultaneous immigration campaigns were spurred by the November presidential election, in which Obama won an overwhelming majority of Hispanic voters. The results caused Republican lawmakers who had previously opposed immigration reform to reconsider in order to rebuild the party's reputation among Hispanics, an increasingly powerful political force.

Most of the recommendations Obama will make Tuesday are not new. He outlined an immigration blueprint in May 2011 but exerted little political capital to get it passed by Congress, to the disappointment of many Hispanics.

Obama "believes that we are at a moment now where there seems to be support coalescing at a bipartisan level behind the very principles that he has long put forward and behind principles that have in the past enjoyed bipartisan support," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday. "And that is a very positive thing."

The president was to make his pitch in Nevada, a political battleground he carried in November, in large part because of support from Hispanics in the state.

Nationally, Obama won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote, giving him a key advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Administration officials said the president would bolster his 2011 immigration blueprint with some fresh details. His original plan centered on four key areas: a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., improved border security, an overhaul of the legal immigration system, and an easier process for businesses to verify the legal status of workers.

Administration officials said they were encouraged to see the Senate backing the same broad principles. In part because of the fast action on Capitol Hill, Obama does not currently plan to send lawmakers formal immigration legislation.

However, officials said the White House does have legislation drafted and could fall back on it should the Senate process stall. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal strategy.

Gay and lesbian advocates were also expecting Obama's proposals to include recognition of same-sex couples where one partner is American and another is not.

Sen. John McCain called the issue a "red flag" in an interview Tuesday on "CBS This Morning."

The Arizona Republican also said he didn't think the issue was of "paramount importance at this time."

"We'll have to look at it," McCain said. But he added that the highest priority is finding a "broad consensus" behind the immigration bill already being planned. He said the country must do something about 11 million people "living in the shadows."

Obama's previous proposals for creating a pathway to citizenship required those already in the U.S. illegally to register with the government and submit to security checks; pay registration fees, a series of fines and back taxes; and learn English. After eight years, individuals would be allowed to become legal permanent residents and could eventually become citizens five years later.

The Senate group's pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. would be contingent upon securing the border and improving tracking of people in the U.S. on visas. Linking citizenship to border security could become a sticking point between the White House and lawmakers.

The Senate framework would also require those here illegally to pass background checks and pay fines and taxes in order to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency, a critical step toward citizenship. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already waiting for a green card within the current immigration system.

Passage of legislation by the full Democratic-controlled Senate is far from assured, but the tallest hurdle could come in the House, which is dominated by conservative Republicans who've shown little interest in immigration reform.

The senators involved in formulating the immigration proposals, in addition to McCain, are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

Los Angeles's First Real Estate Whales: 4 Rancho-Era Bigshots ...

Southern California's first private landowners were the early settlers granted tracts (ranchos) by the Spanish crown and Mexican government. (The crown didn't recognize land ownership, so the first truly "private" ranchos were those registered with the Mexican government after 1821.) Many of these grants were wiped out when California became a state; people couldn't provide the documentation to prove they owned the land, and others lost their family fortunes when the new American laws and regulations bankrupted them, opening the door for a new generation of whales. Here are four of LA's earliest real estate players:

Maria Rita Valdez and a relative, the local schoolmaster, petitioned the Mexican government for the official title to her land in present day Beverly Hills, in 1821. (The rancho was named Rodeo de las Aguas.) But when the schoolmaster got fresh with her, he was ordered off the land; Maria paid him "$17.50 for his share of the land; he threw in a peach tree and some farm equipment," according to Michael Gross's Unreal Estate.

Valdez sold her land to Henry Hancock in 1852, who only owned it for a brief period. He wasn't out of the game for long, though, and later bought Rancho La Brea further east. George Allen Hancock inherited Rancho La Brea from his father and, among other things, developed Hancock Park. He built himself a mansion at the corner of Vermont and Wilshire Boulevard. Before it was demolished, four of its rooms were carefully disassembled and rebuilt on the USC campus, where Hancock was a bigtime donor.

Benjamin Davis Wilson didn't let a few bear attacks deter him from making it to California from his native Tennessee, and when he got here he started buying up the place. Writes Gross: "known as Don Benito, having married into a Spanish family, [he] bought half of the 4,438 acre Rancho San Jose de Buenos Ayres [now Bel Air, Holmby Hills and Westwood] for $662.75" in 1852. Six years later the other half cost him $16,000.

Don Bernardo Yorba's "barronial" rancho in present-day Yorba Linda was the site of one of the largest homes in pre-statehood California. By Carey McWilliams's reckoning, Don Bernardo's 51-room house employed "two tanners, one soapmaker, one butter-and-cheese man, a harnessmaker, two shoemakers, one jeweler ... two errand boys, one head sheepherder, one cook, one baker, two washwomen, a woman to iron, four seamstresses, one dressmaker, two gardeners, a schoolmaster and a number of miscellaneous servants."

Bulgarians support building of new nuclear plant: exit polls

SOFIA (Reuters) - A majority of Bulgarians supported the building of a new nuclear power plant in the country's first referendum since the fall of communism, exit polls showed on Sunday, increasing pressure on rightist government which has opposed the plan.

While the low turnout of between 19.5 and 20.3 percent means the result will not be binding, it shows Prime Minister Boiko Borisov's policies have alienated many voters and complicated his campaign for a July election.

Internet Marketing, A Boost For Search Engine Optimization

Since the inception of eCommerce, different marketing techniques are used to make the product or service popular and reachable. These techniques are often grouped under internet marketing. Internet marketing has become an everyday cup of tea for entities which believe in online presence. Both aggressive and non-aggressive methods are used to escalate the ratings of product. One of the crucial factors in increasing the popularity is search engine optimization.

SEO is specifically designed to take into consideration content which is rich in keywords that are exact and appropriate in use for the website. This implies SEO contains a lot of information about the product. The product is often absorbed in the form of keyword which spider follows while moving around the web. The more specific use of word helps the spider crawl on the top of the search engine. This strategy of search engine optimization is followed by developers to make their clients or websites visible on the first page of search engine. The main job of Search Engine Optimization is likely to be achieved when tons of traffic start flooding the web and resort to buying or using the service. The back links are provided to allow the surfer to visit the website. These links are provided in the resource section of article directories.

One of the other internet marketing tools is used with the assistance of search engines. Social media marketing makes use of social networking websites to create online presence of product and service. Several messages and videos are shared and exchanged on internet. Some of the videos create controversy while some create sensation. Whatever the purpose, the main target of making things visible or making news helps in pulling the traffic onto the website. Like Search Engine Optimization, social media marketing has gained a lot of publicity since it entered the net platform and started allowing net surfers to open accounts free of cost. Though some services are paid, most of the surfers prefer to keep their account in public mode, visible to all.

One of the important aspects of web development is graphic design. Graphics make a page dynamic and accentuate the outlook of the website. Some website use animation software like Flash while others integrate some animations in the form of DHTML. Photoshop is also used to make graphics, design links or page itself. Graphic designers have a lot of experience in presenting the best websites on the internet platform. It is not only easy to create a website and integrate different features; it is also convenient to make eCommerce a part of website.

Search Engine Optimization has taken the entire internet market under its fold. Not a single enterprise stays behind in this era of online competition. The new applications are fast arriving on the platform. The latest products are used and developers are learning new methods to help clients with sales and revenue generation. It is difficult to think about selling a product without online marketing.

Male dancers signal their strength to men and women

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Heterosexual men pick up clues about other men's physical qualities from their dance moves just as heterosexual women do, say researchers at Northumbria University.

A study, led by psychologist Dr Nick Neave and researcher Kristofor McCarty, used 3D motion-capture technology and biomechanical analyses to examine the extent to which male dancing provides clues about the dancer's physical strength and fitness to both male and female observers.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Human Biology, suggest that male observers pick up on the strength of their potential rivals for female mates.

Researchers at Northumbria's School of Life Sciences filmed 30 males, aged 19-37, as they danced to a basic drum rhythm. Participants also completed a fitness test and assessments of upper and lower body strength. The dance clips were converted into virtual humanoid characters (avatars) and rated by women and men on perceived dance and physical qualities. The ratings were then correlated with various biomechanical indices.

The results showed that both sexes found significant positive associations between an individual's hand grip strength and their perceived dance quality, these qualities were picked up by the size and vigour of the movements of the upper body and arms.

Although it is traditionally thought that signals given off by men when they dance have been designed -- like animal mating displays -- to be interpreted as clues of their physical attributes to the opposite sex, it seems that heterosexual men are also making use of these signals, presumably to detect a potential love rival.

Dr Nick Neave believes that this increased sensitivity to male qualities by other heterosexual men may be due to intrasexual rivalry -- men sizing up the strength and virility of their competition.

He said: "Rated dance quality was positively associated with actual grip strength and these clues of upper-body strength were most accurately picked up by male observers. This ability to discern upper-body strength is principally because men are looking for cues of 'formidability' in other males.

"Upper-body strength is highly related to fighting ability as it reflects the ability to do damage, especially in intra-sexual conflicts. The ability to gauge strength before potential conflicts is sensible, especially to other males."

Also part of the research team were Northumbria University academics Dr Nick Caplan and Johannes H?nekopp, with Bernard Fink, from the Institute of Zoology and Anthropology, University of G?ttingen, Germany.

The study, "Male body movements as possible cues to physical strength: a biomechanical analysis", is published online in this month's American Journal of Human Biology

Sandy refugees scramble for housing Saturday night

By Brian Thompson, NBCNewYork.com

About a hundred homeless Sandy refugees in New Jersey were left without a place to stay for several hours on Saturday as a FEMA housing program appeared to run out on them.

At one point, they were being told to shelter at a church in Brick Township where volunteers were trying to find replacement accommodations for them.

NBC New York has learned that when Gov. Chris Christie learned of the situation, he ordered his Department of Community Affairs to work with FEMA to place them in alternate motel rooms.

"We're not going to let people be out on the street," said DCA Commissioner Richard Constable.

For more visit NBCNewYork.com

At the last minute the night before(on Friday night), a FEMA spokesman said a two week extension to the Transitional Shelter Assistance program had been granted, but that some of the 1500 or so families still sheltering in motels probably would not be notified until Saturday morning, just before they would have been forced to check out.

The hundred or so who ended up losing their motel rooms never got word Saturday morning they could have stayed, according to Constable, and that's when the state jumped in.

FEMA leaves many Sandy victims languishing

Working with FEMA, the families were finally contacted by late Saturday afternoon or early evening, and all were placed in new motel rooms, where they can stay for the next two weeks, which is the duration of the program's extension.

"All families who were displaced were relocated by Saturday night," Constable said.??

Anonymous hijacks federal website to avenge activist's death

17 hrs.

WASHINGTON???The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide. The FBI is investigating.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch (http://www.ussc.gov), was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online, and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

The FBI's Richard McFeely, executive assistant director of the agency's?Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, said in a statement that "we were aware as soon as it happened and are handling it as a criminal investigation. We are always concerned when someone illegally accesses another person's or government agency's network."

Hours after the hijacking, pages on the USSC.gov website were available only sporadically.

Sarah Palin vows to fight on without Fox News gig

The ?lamestream media,? as Sarah Palin calls it, may have written her off now that the former vice presidential candidate and tea party favorite has lost her principal media voice as a well-paid commentator on Fox News.

But there?s no indication that Ms. Palin will go back to life in Alaska as the former mayor of a small town and then governor for two years, fishing and hunting with her family -- the life she had before Sen. John McCain picked her out of relative political obscurity to be his running mate in 2008.

?I was raised to never retreat and to pick battles wisely, and all in due season,? she said in the one substantial interview she?s given since Real Clear Politics first reported that Palin and Fox had parted ways. ?When it comes to defending our republic, we haven?t begun to fight! But we delight in those who underestimate us.?

How well do you know Sarah Palin? A quiz.

The extent to which the conservative-leaning TV enterprise tried to keep her onboard is still unclear.

Fox reportedly offered Palin far less than the million-dollar annual contract that had included a broadcast studio at her home in Wasilla, Alaska. She turned it down, and Fox had no inclination to up the ante.

?What happened, quite simply, is that Palin?s star had faded,? Howard Kurtz wrote in Newsweek?s the Daily Beast. ?She was no longer the rock star of 2008, her future presidential ambitions the subject of constant speculation.?

For Fox News, it seemed to be largely a business decision. Or as CEO Roger Ailes put it in 2011, ?I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings.? But there was more to it than that, it seems.

?The political climate shifted as well, with Republicans, having been shellacked in their second straight presidential election, debating a future involving [Marco] Rubio and [Chris] Christie and [Paul] Ryan but not Palin,? Kurtz wrote. ?And the atmosphere at Fox shifted as well. It was no longer a network in the throes of a tea party revolt and providing a platform for Glenn Beck. Fox edged a bit closer to the center, and Palin began to seem more the [actor] Julianne Moore of [the HBO movie] ?Game Change? than a political force.?

In her interview with Stephen Bannon on Breitbart.com ? the conservative news and opinion website founded by the late Andrew Breitbart ? Palin promised to stay in the fight, pointedly targeting establishment Republicans as well as President Obama.

?Focus on the 2014 election is ? imperative,? she said. ?It?s going to be like 2010 [when Republicans took over the US House of Representatives], but this time around we need to shake up the GOP machine that tries to orchestrate away too much of the will of constitutional conservatives who don?t give a hoot how they do it in DC.

?We?re not going to be able to advance the cause of limited constitutional government unless we deal with these big government enablers on our side,? Palin said. ?And this all ties into the problem of crony capitalism and the permanent political class in the Beltway. We need to consistently take them on election after election ? ever vigilant.?

That pretty much describes tea party attitudes and philosophy, and Palin urges followers to ?jump out of the comfort zone, and broaden our reach as believers in American exceptionalism.?

?That means broadening our audience,? she acknowledges. ?I?m taking my own advice here as I free up opportunities to share more broadly the message of the beauty of freedom and the imperative of defending our republic and restoring this most exceptional nation. We can't just preach to the choir; the message of liberty and true hope must be understood by a larger audience. ?

Is that larger audience available for Palin?s unique style of political pot-stirring?

A Rasmussen Reports poll earlier this month shows ?views of the tea party movement are at their lowest point ever,? with just eight percent of those surveyed self-identifying as members of the movement, down from a high of 24 percent in April 2010. Just 30 percent have a favorable view of the movement, 49 percent an unfavorable view.

So Palin may relish the fight, but it won?t be an easy one.

How well do you know Sarah Palin? A quiz.

(AP) ? A long-simmering spat between billionaire investors Carl Icahn and Bill Ackman boiled over into a shouting match on live television Friday.

The two Wall Street titans, interviewed by phone simultaneously on CNBC, traded barbs about an old investment deal and on Ackman's position in the nutritional supplements distributor Herbalife Inc.

Ackman was being interviewed by CNBC host Scott Wapner a day after Icahn made disparaging comments about him on Bloomberg Television. After Ackman had spoken about some of his current investment positions, Wapner interrupted the conversation to say that Icahn had called in and had a few points to make.

"I've really sort of had it with this guy Ackman," Icahn told CNBC. "He's like the crybaby in the school yard."

The two men then spent the best part of thirty minutes telling Wapner why they didn't much care for each other.

"This is not an honest guy, this is not a guy who keeps his word," Ackman said. "This is a guy who takes advantage of little people."

The animosity between the two men dates back to at least 2003, when Icahn bought a stake in Hallwood Realty Partners from Ackman's former fund Gotham Partners. Icahn paid $80 a share for that investment and, according to Ackman, agreed to pay a portion of any future profit to Ackman's fund.

Icahn referred to the clause as "schmuck insurance," and refused to pay up when Hallwood was acquired a year later for $136 a share, according to Ackman's version of events.

Ackman then sued Icahn on behalf of his investors and won. He says that Icahn then called him, congratulated him on winning his claim and said he wanted to be his friend. Ackman declined the invitation.

"Carl Icahn does not have a good reputation for being a handshake guy," said Ackman.

That version of events, in particular the claim that he wanted to be Ackman's friend, is disputed by Icahn. He also said that he had helped Icahn "out of a jam," when he bought the stake in Hallwood.

"To get the record straight, I never asked Ackman to be my friend," Icahn told CNBC. "Quite to the contrary, Ackman has stated to me on more than one occasion that it's a shame we are not friends because then he could have invested with me."

One of Ackman's recent big bets is on Herbalife.

In December, the hedge fund manager said that the nutritional supplements distributor was a pyramid scheme and that he was taking a short position in the stock. Short-sellers make money when the stock they're betting against declines.

In an interview with Bloomberg Television Thursday, Icahn had said it was no secret that he neither liked nor respected Ackman and he didn't like how he had approached his short position in Herbalife, "getting a room full of people to bad mouth the company."

Icahn refused to comment on whether he held a position in Herbalife, but speculation is rife that he bought a stake in a bet against his old adversary.

Despite the ongoing fight with his rival, Icahn has reason to be cheerful this week.

Less than five months ago, the investor decided to go against the grain and make a big investment in the Internet video service Netflix, at a time when most investors were spurning the company.

Icahn bought a stake of almost 10 percent in Netflix for $324 million. The value of that stake has already almost tripled to $941 million after Netflix's stock surged this week, when the company reported an unexpected profit and an influx of 2 million U.S. subscribers to its service.

Vine Swings To The Top Of Social In App Store, Claims 14th Spot In Free Apps

vinetopappVine was just released yesterday as Twitter's new standalone video-sharing iOS app. It lets users thread together tiny clips into one looping six-second video, with a UI very similar to Instagram's. The app expectedly made a splash with early adopters in the tech world and has seemed to gain momentum in the past 24 hours, becoming the top free app in the App Store's social category. It's also risen to be the number 14 top free app overall. The real question, however, is whether or not Vine can keep its top placement in the App Store and continue to accrue downloads and new users. Jobless claims fall to five-year low

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell to its lowest since the early days of the 2007-09 recession, a hopeful sign for the sluggish labor market.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 330,000, the lowest level since January 2008, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

"The economy's doing better," said Michael Strauss, an economist at Commonfund in Wilton, Connecticut.

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected claims to rise to 355,000 last week.

Economists have cautioned about reading too deeply into this month's figures, as claims tend to be volatile around this time of the year. This is because of large swings in the model used by the department to iron out seasonal fluctuations.

A measure of labor market trends nonetheless pointed to an improvement in the labor market's health. The four-week moving average for new claims fell 8,250 to 351,750, the lowest since March 2008.

U.S. Treasury debt prices pared gains after the data, while the dollar extended gains versus the yen. U.S. stock futures were lower on disappointment over Apple's earnings.

Claims have now fallen for two straight weeks, suggesting employers do not yet see tax hikes enacted this month as a big threat to consumer demand.

A Labor Department analyst said claims data were estimated for three states last week, but there was nothing unusual in the state level data.

Claims are now at roughly the same level they were in much of 2006 and 2007. Claims started trending higher around December 2007, the month that the country's recession began.

However, while employers have pulled back on layoffs, they have only added jobs to the economy at a lackluster pace.

"The jobs market is just treading water at this point," Stephen Stanley, an economist at Pierpont Securities in Stamford, Connecticut.

Analysts polled by Reuters expect an employment report due on February 1 will show 165,000 jobs were added to payrolls this month, up from 155,000 new positions in December. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 7.8 percent.

Job gains averaged 153,000 jobs per month in 2012, little changed from 2011. The sluggish labor market and subdued inflation pressures appear likely to keep the Federal Reserve on its ultra easy monetary policy course.

The claims report showed the number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid dropped 71,000 to 3.16 million in the week ended January 12.

AT&T gains customers in 4Q, posts big loss

(AP) ? The launch of the iPhone 5 helped AT&T attract more new customers in the holiday quarter than it has in three years, but the company posted a big loss because of an annual adjustment to its pension obligations.

AT&T Inc. on Thursday said it added a net 780,000 new phones and other devices on contract-based plans from October to December, its best result in three years. It activated 8.6 million iPhones in the quarter ? a record for any company. AT&T was the first company to introduce the iPhone in 2007, and has more iPhone users than any other U.S. carrier.

AT&T's push to expand its market by getting non-phone devices connected to its network also helped, as nearly half of the new contract devices, or 380,000, were tablets.

However, AT&T remained well behind Verizon Wireless, the country's largest cellphone company. It added 2.2 million devices on contract-based plans to its network in the quarter, extending its lead.

Dallas-based AT&T's quarterly loss was $3.86 billion, or 68 cents per share. That compares with a loss of $6.68 billion, or $1.12 per share, a year earlier, also caused by an adjustment to pension and retiree benefit obligations.

AT&T provides benefits to about 360,000 retirees. Two years ago, it started accounting for its retirement benefit obligations with an annual fourth-quarter adjustment. That produces wild swings in fourth-quarter net income that don't relate to the company's underlying business, but do illustrate its large obligations to retirees.

Excluding the pension adjustment and some of the cost of repairs from Superstorm Sandy, AT&T earned 44 cents per share, 2 cents short of the average analyst estimate as polled by FactSet.

Revenue was $32.6 billion, up a hair from $32.5 billion a year ago. It slightly exceeded analyst estimates of $32.2 billion.

For the full year, AT&T said it was looking at expanding revenue by more than 2 percent and earnings per share by a "high single-digit percentage." The revenue forecast was slightly higher than analysts expected.

AT&T shares fell 2 cents to $33.73 in extended trading, after the release of the results.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that AT&T was considering the possible purchase of a European cellphone company to take advantage of depressed prices and perhaps boost results by bringing U.S. business formulas to the continent. On a conference call with analysts, CEO Randall Stephenson neither supported nor ruled out the idea, but suggested that the company is looking at other types of international ventures, like partnerships and roaming agreements. He also noted that the company is licensing its Digital Life home security and automation technology to European carriers.

For all of 2012, AT&T earned $7.3 billion, up 84 percent from $3.9 billion in 2011. Revenue rose 0.6 percent to $127.4 billion.
