Egypt's mufti urges Muslims to endure insults peacefully

CAIRO (Reuters) - Muslims angered by cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammad should follow his example of enduring insults without retaliating, Egypt's highest Islamic legal official said on Thursday.

Western embassies tightened security in Sanaa, fearing the cartoons published in a French magazine on Wednesday could lead to more unrest in the Yemeni capital where crowds attacked the U.S. mission last week over an anti-Islam film made in America.

In the latest of a wave of protests against that video in the Islamic world, several thousand Shi'ite Muslims demonstrated in the northern Nigerian town of Zaria, burning an effigy of U.S. President Barack Obama and crying "Death to America".

The cartoons in France's Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly have provoked relatively little street anger so far, although about 100 Iranians demonstrated outside the French embassy in Tehran.

In Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring revolts, the Islamist-led government decreed a ban on protests planned on Friday against the cartoons. Four people died and almost 30 others were wounded last week when protesters incensed by the movie about Prophet Mohammad stormed the U.S. embassy.

An Islamist activist called for attacks in France to avenge the perceived insult to Islam by the "slaves of the cross".

Mu'awiyya al-Qahtani said on a website used by Islamist militants and monitored by the U.S.-based SITE intelligence group: "Is there someone who will roll up his sleeves and bring back to us the glory of the hero Mohammed Merah?"

He was referring to an al Qaeda-inspired gunman who killed seven people, including three Jewish children, in the southern French city of Toulouse in March.

Condemning the publication of the cartoons in France as an act verging on incitement, Egypt's Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa said it showed how polarised the West and the Muslim world had become.

Gomaa said Mohammad and his companions had endured "the worst insults from the non-believers of his time. Not only was his message routinely rejected, but he was often chased out of town, cursed and physically assaulted on numerous occasions.

"But his example was always to endure all personal insults and attacks without retaliation of any sort. There is no doubt that, since the Prophet is our greatest example in this life, this should also be the reaction of all Muslims."

His statement echoed one by Al Azhar, Egypt's prestigious seat of Sunni learning, which condemned the caricatures showing the Prophet naked but said any protest should be peaceful.

An official at the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt, whose population of 83 million people is 10 percent Christian, also condemned the cartoons as insults to Islam.

Last week some Egyptian protesters scaled the U.S. Embassy walls and tore down the flag. They clashed with police for four days, although most of the thousands of Egyptians who took to the streets did so peacefully.

MUSLIM GRIEVANCES

Gomaa said insults to Islam and the response, including the killing of the U.S. ambassador in Libya and attacks on other Western embassies in the region, could not be dissociated from other points of conflict between the West and the Muslim world.

He cited the treatment of Muslims at the U.S. detention centre in Guantanamo, the U.S.-led war in Iraq, drone attacks in Yemen and Pakistan, and the demonisation of Muslims by far-right European parties as "underlying factors" for the tensions.

"To then insist on igniting these simmering tensions by publishing hurtful and insulting material in a foolhardy attempt at bravado - asserting the superiority of Western freedoms over alleged Muslim closed-mindedness - verges on incitement," he said in his statement published on the Reuters blog FaithWorld.

After Friday's invasion of the U.S. embassy in Tunis, the Tunisian Interior Ministry has banned protests against the cartoon planned for Friday "to prevent human and material losses". It warned that a state of emergency was still in force and that law "will be rigorously applied".

The European Union issued a joint appeal, through its foreign policy chief, with the Arab League, African Union and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation for "peace and tolerance".

"We condemn any advocacy of religious hatred that constitutes incitement to hostility and violence," the statement said.

"While fully recognizing freedom of expression, we believe in the importance of respecting all prophets, regardless of which religion they belong to."

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast condemned the cartoons as "a systematic plot" against Islam.

"The coordinated and continued silence of Western countries towards these hateful anti-Islamic actions, is the primary reason for the repetition of such insulting actions," he said.

He was speaking a day after French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius called the publication of the cartoons a provocation.

The Danish cartoonist who outraged Muslims with a drawing of the Prophet seven years ago said the West could not let itself be muzzled by fear of offending Islamic sensibilities.

Kurt Westergaard, whose lampoon of Mohammad in the Jyllands-Posten paper nearly got him killed by an axe-wielding assassin in 2010, told Austrian magazine News he had no regrets about his work and said freedom of speech was too precious to relinquish.

"Should we in future let ourselves be censored by Islamic authorities in deeply undemocratic countries?" he asked.

For many Muslims, any depiction of Mohammad is blasphemous.

The furore over the anti-Islam film and the cartoons has presented a tough challenge to new authorities in Arab countries where popular uprisings have overthrown entrenched autocrats.

In Libya, where militias that helped overthrow Muammar Gaddafi still wield much power, the foreign minister offered a further apology for U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens' death to visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns on Thursday.

Stevens and three other Americans died in an attack on the U.S. consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi by gunmen among a crowd protesting against the film that denigrated the Prophet.

I'm Christopher Jobson, and This Is How I Work [How I Work]

I'm Christopher Jobson, and This Is How I WorkBy day, Christopher Jobson is a web designer at a financial firm; by night, early morning, and weekend, he writes and edits Colossal. Christopher started Colossal in 2010 to explore "the intersection of art, design, and physical craft, specifically artwork that is tactile, physical, and non-digital in nature." Each week, he posts 15 or so of the coolest (seriously, coolest) paintings, installations, animations, buildings, pieces of street art, and more from around the world. As he explains it, the site serves as "a reminder that in this digital age there are still thousands of incredible people making work with their bare hands." Christopher talked to us about how he manages a round-the-clock work schedule?from the apps that keep everything running to the tunes that keep him inspired.

Name: Christopher Jobson
Occupation: Sole editor/blogger at Colossal, web designer, dad, husband, forced insomniac
Location: Chicago, IL
Current computer: 2008 MacBook Pro
Current mobile devices: White iPhone 4S
I work: Always

What apps/software/tools can't you live without?

For running the blog, I can't live without WordPress. The site runs on a super easy to use content delivery network called CloudFlare, has fonts served from TypeKit, and great real-time stats from ChartBeat. On my MacBook, I couldn't function without LaunchBar. I also can't use a computer without a Logitech Performance Mouse MX.

How do you manage your to-do list?

My email inbox and a piece of paper. I use Basecamp for larger projects.

What's your best time-saving shortcut?

I get stupid amounts of email, submissions, and spam, but I obsessively keep my inbox at around 20 or so items. It's my to-do list. Is there a fancy name for that? I also read a few hundred websites each day and am sure to at least glance at every item on all of them. I use Chrome and a great plugin called Page Monitor to help with that. I live in Google Reader?even after all these years, it's still the best.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

I'm not much of a gadget person really, other than my phone which accomplishes so much these days. Next most important would be my Apple TV.

What's your workspace setup like?

Bed, couch, coffee shop, train, park. Our home is too small for an office or even a work desk so things are 100% mobile.

What do you listen to while you work?

Lately lots of Zoe Keating, Andrew Bird, Girl Talk, Led Zeppelin, and Hot Chip.

What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else? What's your secret?

I make an incredible martini because I follow directions from Jim Coudal.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

I love this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson about enthusiasm: "Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality. Be active, be energetic, be enthusiastic and faithful, and you will accomplish your objective. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm."

I also love this quote from [This American Life's] Ira Glass about [pushing] something from mediocrity into the realm of something incredible: "For me, pushing myself is way more about 'It's hard to make something that's interesting.' It's really, really hard, and I'm sure we don't succeed with every story on every show. Basically, anything that anyone makes? It's like a law of nature, a law of aerodynamics, that anything that's written or anything that's created wants to be mediocre. The natural state of all writing is mediocrity. It's all tending toward mediocrity in the same way that all atoms are sort of dissipating out toward the expanse of the universe. Everything wants to be mediocre, so what it takes to make anything more than mediocre is such a fucking act of will. Anyone who makes something for a living, or even not for a living, if they're really excited about it?You just have to exert so much will into something for it to be good. That feels exactly the same now as it did the first week of the show. That hasn't changed at all. That's the premise of what it takes to make something."

The How I Work series asks heroes, experts, brilliant, and flat-out productive people to share their shortcuts, workspaces, routines, and more. Every Wednesday we'll feature a new guest and the gadgets, apps, tips, and tricks that keep them going. Have someone you'd kill to see featured, or questions you think we should ask? Email Tessa.

India hit by national strike over economic reforms

BHUBANESWAR, India (Reuters) - Schools, shops and government offices were shut in some Indian states on Thursday as protesters blocked road and rail traffic as part of a one-day nationwide strike against sweeping economic reforms announced by the government last week.

The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), joined by smaller parties from both the political left and right, called for the strike to protest against a 14 percent hike in heavily subsidized diesel prices, and a government decision that opens the door to foreign supermarket chains to invest in India.

The measures, part of a package of big-bang economic reforms aimed at boosting a sharply slowing economy, have triggered a political firestorm. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's biggest ally pulled out of his shaky coalition on Tuesday, raising the risk of an early election.

Bangalore, India's IT and outsourcing hub, was hard hit by the strike, but in Mumbai, the country's financial capital, banks and offices were open as usual. In New Delhi, shops were shut in BJP constituencies and there were fewer cars on the road, but the central business district was untouched.

Across the country, morning commuters were left stranded at train stations and bus-stops as protesters squatted on railway tracks and laid siege to some bus depots. Supporters of the right-wing Hindu nationalist BJP and other opposition parties also blocked some roads with burning tires.

"If we don't protest now, the central government will eliminate the poor and middle-class families," said Santi Barik as she protested in Bhubaneswar, the capital of the eastern state of Odisha.

Government offices, businesses, schools and banks in Bhubaneswar were shut, and similar shutdowns were reported in other cities, including Hyderabad, the IT hub in Andhra Pradesh state that is home to local offices of Microsoft Corp and Google Inc. Police arrested dozens of opposition supporters who surrounded the biggest bus station in Andhra Pradesh.

In Bangalore, most of the 3,500 staff employed by Intel Corp and 10,000 staff at Cisco Systems Inc were asked to work from home, company spokesmen said. Infosys Ltd and Wipro Ltd gave workers the day off, but will ask them to work on Saturday instead.

The Congress party-ruled coalition, which has a record for buckling under pressure, partially rolled backed a petrol price increase earlier this year after facing a similar strike. Some Congress officials have hinted the new 5 rupee per liter diesel price hike could be cut, and a new limit on subsidized cooking gas cylinders may also be raised. But they have held firm against calls for the retail reform to be scrapped.

The BJP is seeking to exploit popular anger against the diesel hike and retail reforms - which many mom-and-pop store owners fear will destroy their livelihoods - ahead of a series of state elections later this year and national elections due by 2014.
